Ramco Logging Relies on Rotobec's Ultra-Tough Log Grapples
Independent logging contractors rely heavily on their fleets of machines to get the job done. Roy Ramco, owner of Ramco Logging in Oregon, has been in the clear cutting and thinning business for nearly 30 years, and has been using Rotobec’s tough handling equipment without fail for the last 21 of those years.
Roy first purchased a 42” rubber-tire log grapple back in 1989 when the item he was originally looking for couldn’t be found. He has been sticking with the Rotobec brand ever since, later obtaining two 52” log grapple attachments for his existing track machines. Then came his most recent purchase, a 60” grapple in the Summer of 2009. Roy first saw the machine in operation at the Oregon Logging Conference in February and liked what he saw. Later that year, he spoke with Mark Shukla, Sales Manager at Rotobec West in Kelowna, BC, to go over his options.
Once the selection was made, Mark sent the grapple to Ironman Machinery in Eugene, Oregon, for pick up. It was that simple. Rotobec machinery can also be found at Triad Machinery in the Oregon and Washington areas.
I have tried all different kinds of grapples, I can’t even name all of them. I have stuck with Rotobec’s machines since I started buying them, and have not really gone back to buying others,” states Roy. “Mostly, I like the way Rotobec machines perform and especially for their durability. They are pretty tough,” he adds.
With a basic, proven structure, and quality steel used in the manufacturing process, Rotobec machines really hold together, unlike the others, which would flex and bend over time, Roy explains. “So far, I haven’t had those types of problems."
The original Rotobec attachment Roy purchased in 1989 is still being used by a new owner, with the only repair being the repacking of the main cylinders. Roy estimates there is probably upwards to 18,000 hours on the attachment by now. Roy’s second 52” grapple, purchased in ‘99, has approximately 15,000 operational hours on it. “I still have that machine and the grapple is still going strong,” he says.
