A Storm Cleanup Operator's Perspective on Rotobec

When severe storms leave roads lined with fallen trees and debris, cleanup crews rely on equipment that can keep up with demanding schedules. For grapple truck operators, every movement counts when collecting material and keeping trucks moving.

Austin Elliott, a grapple truck operator with Sunderland Trucking’s storm division, knows these demands firsthand. From railroad operations to storm cleanup, his experience with different loader brands has given him a clear understanding of what makes equipment effective in the field.

Where Every Movement Counts

Austin began his career operating Rotobec 910 loaders while working in railroad operations in Boonville, Missouri. Since then, he’s operated several different loader brands, but Rotobec continues to stand out for its smooth, responsive operation.

“Every movement counts, speed counts. So you want to be fast, but you want to be fluid,” said Austin.

During storm cleanup, operators often need to perform multiple movements simultaneously, from rotating the grapple to raising the boom and positioning debris around obstacles.

With Rotobec, Austin says those movements remain consistent without one operation slowing down another.

“They’re just a smoother loader. They’re faster. They’re just as strong as any other ones,” he explained.

Smooth Operation Makes a Difference

Working along roadsides presents unique challenges, particularly when navigating obstacles and handling debris in confined areas. Having precise, predictable control over the loader can make a significant difference.

For Austin, Rotobec’s ability to maintain smooth movements during simultaneous operations contributes to both productivity and operator confidence.

“If I want to grab something and bring it to me at the same time that I’m spinning, I can do that. And nothing’s getting slowed down,” said Austin.

That consistency also plays an important role in how safely an operator can handle material throughout the workday.

“To me, with it being like that, it’s safer,” he added.

Easy Maintenance, Less Downtime

In storm cleanup, keeping equipment running is just as important as how it performs. With crews working long hours, unexpected maintenance can interrupt an otherwise productive day.

Austin points to Rotobec’s accessible hydraulic components and straightforward hose replacement as important advantages.

“Everything’s easy on the Rotobec. Everything I can get to right there,” he said.

By carrying spare hydraulic hoses in his truck, Austin can address common repairs directly in the field without extensive disassembly.

“I can just bring the grapple out of the truck and put it down and change it in minutes,” he explained.

For operators working against demanding schedules, that accessibility helps minimize interruptions and get equipment back to work.

Keeping Storm Cleanup Moving

For Austin, storm cleanup means early mornings, long days, and a consistent routine. Crews are assigned designated areas where they work along roads collecting debris before transporting loads to disposal sites.

“I wake up before the sun comes up and I run until they tell me to stop running,” said Austin. “I run till sun goes down, till the dumps close.”

With demanding schedules and challenging conditions, reliable equipment and smooth operation are essential to maintaining productivity.

From precise material handling to accessible maintenance, Austin’s experience demonstrates how Rotobec loaders help operators stay productive and focused on the job, one load at a time.
